Sad news in The Meadows. Sue Redman passed away last week. There is a service for her:
Saturday at All Saints at 4:00.
132 Euclid Ave., Pasadena
Saturday, December 21
4:00 pm
I had the pleasure of getting to know her. She and her husband Rich live at the end of Gravelia.
Many neighbors may have seen her on many walks that she and Diana Robinson would make around the neighborhood.
She also had written a book in the last year that was announced here.
There is a contact for if there are any questions - Ana Comacho 626-583-2737.
Our thoughts are with Rich.

Tele[hone lines down on Risinghill
From a neighbor just NE of Canyon Crest:
The thing that looks like a power line down across the road on Risinghill is actually our phone lines. AT&T won't be here until tomorrow.

CERT Shake Out Oct 19
Altadena CERT is going to have a Shake Out exercise of
our own, all across Altadena and unincorporated Pasadena on Saturday Oct 19
starting at about 10am.
We encourage neighborhoods to hold their own mini-shake
out drills first and then participate with all of us after that.
We need members of the public who want to offer to help,
act as victims, or act as "concerned public".
We also need sites in Altadena where some CERT members
can go on Saturday for 15-20 minutes or so, walk around in the yard and
communicate back to the Operations Center via radio.
(They will be reading from a scripted card describing
what they are seeing, no one needs to do any staging or let anyone into their
home unless they want to.)
Any CERTs are welcome to participate.
Employees of First Responder and Pubic Agencies are very
welcome also.

Leona Kassabian Passing
Leona "Lee" Kassabian, who lived on Canyon Crest, passed away peacefully on July 6. Many Meadows residents knew who as she was often sitting outside her door and chatting with everyone.
Lee was Linda Quay's Mother. (Linda passed away several years ago.) She is survived by her John, son-in-law Harold Quay, and granddaughters Meghan and Jennie.
I think she was even named Altadena Senior of the Year once.
She was a wonderful person and very friendly.

Bear on El Prieto Driveway
A neighbor in the 4500 block of El Prieto reported a medium sized bear on her driveway this morning at 9:15. They know the bear lives down in the canyon. But isn't that unusual for a bear to come out so early in the morning?

Another Attempted Break-in Thursday, 6/10, morning
Neighbors on Risinghill reported another attempted break-in Thursday morning.
One man and two women, African-American, were seen in the backyard of a home on Risinghill. A second man was sitting in a white late-model car, possibly a Toyota.
They left the property. When the owner returned, they found that a brick had been thrown at a back window. It broker the outer pane, but not the inner pane. No entry was made into the house.
We have had two other break-ins in the past few weeks. One on Risinghill and one on Canyon Crest.
The Sheriff station was called and reports made for all incidents.
As always, if you see unusual behavior in The Meadows, call the Sheriff right away.
We need to continue to be diligent.

Altadena Community Garden Revitalization and Fund Raising
The Altadena Community Garden (ACG) Corner Revitalization Projectis in full
swing with plans being finalized and plant lists being put in order. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation has already cleared, mulched and installed a new state of the art solar timer irrigation system. They will also provide long term maintenance of the area once the project is completed. The only parts missing now are the plants and planting supplies to cover the 3,800 square feet, estimated to cost $14,000.
For this reason, ACG has officially begun a capital campaign. Garden Members are making project presentations throughout the community and are developing a direct-mail request.
Any other potential donors should contact: (626) 470-7482.

Encampment in the Canyon
From a neighbor:
"We havve discovered a homeless encampment, in the canyon below Canyon Crest Rd. When I investigated it, there were 2 collapsed tents, a lot of trash, books, clothes hanging over trees and such.
While I did not see evidence of a camp fire, this likens to the Eaton canyon fire, started by a homeless person's campfire, years ago that burned over to Cheney trail and burned down several homes in the ridge areas.
I called the Sheriff, they said I would get faster response if I called the forrest service, with no avail by either agency. The forrest personelle who answered took my phone number and said an investigator will call me back. I have called again and told to do the same thing.
Any one else want to try?"

False Report of Fire
There were at least five fire trucks up here at around 6:30 p.m. A neighbor on Canyon Crest said that someone reported a fire, which appears not to have happened. So, hopefully no one is trying to pull a prank. It was nice to know that they responded with lots of back-up
Alert System has Expired
The alert system that the Meadows FireSafe Council funded for three years has expired. I've asked the new MFSC if 2013 funds could be allocated to renew for another three years. I think it will be funded, just waiting for the money to be distributed. I did confirm that all our information will remain in the database so that we can just reactivate it. In the interim, we don't have the alert system.

A neighbor reported a bobcat on El Prieto the past two days. It had a squirrel in its mouth. She wanted to give neighbors a heads-up to be careful with your smaller pets, like cats, since it seems to be in hunting mode.
