Altadena Community Garden Revitalization and Fund Raising

The Altadena Community Garden (ACG) Corner Revitalization Projectis in full
swing with plans being finalized and plant lists being put in order. The Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation has already cleared, mulched and installed a new state of the art solar timer irrigation system. They will also provide long term maintenance of the area once the project is completed. The only parts missing now are the plants and planting supplies to cover the 3,800 square feet, estimated to cost $14,000.

For this reason, ACG has officially begun a capital campaign. Garden Members are making project presentations throughout the community and are developing a direct-mail request.

Any other potential donors should contact: (626) 470-7482.

Encampment in the Canyon

From a neighbor:

"We havve discovered a homeless encampment, in the canyon below Canyon Crest Rd. When I investigated it, there were 2 collapsed tents, a lot of trash, books, clothes hanging over trees and such.

While I did not see evidence of a camp fire, this likens to the Eaton canyon fire, started by a homeless person's campfire, years ago that burned over to Cheney trail and burned down several homes in the ridge areas.

I called the Sheriff, they said I would get faster response if I called the forrest service, with no avail by either agency. The forrest personelle who answered took my phone number and said an investigator will call me back. I have called again and told to do the same thing.

Any one else want to try?"

Bear Visiting Top of El Prieto

The title basically says it all.  A neighbor at the very top of El Prieto has been visiting the homes up there regularly.  Guess any hibernation period is over.

Community Yard Sale?

A couple of neighbors are interested in a community yard sale. Any other neighbors interested? Its more fun when there's a group.

False Report of Fire

There were at least five fire trucks up here at around 6:30 p.m. A neighbor on Canyon Crest said that someone reported a fire, which appears not to have happened. So, hopefully no one is trying to pull a prank. It was nice to know that they responded with lots of back-up

Alert System has Expired

The alert system that the Meadows FireSafe Council funded for three years has expired. I've asked the new MFSC if 2013 funds could be allocated to renew for another three years. I think it will be funded, just waiting for the money to be distributed. I did confirm that all our information will remain in the database so that we can just reactivate it. In the interim, we don't have the alert system.

Bobcat on El Prieto

A neighbor reported a bobcat on El Prieto the past two days.  It had a squirrel in its mouth.  She wanted to give neighbors a heads-up to be careful with your smaller pets, like cats, since it seems to be in hunting mode.

Meadows Resident Publishes Book

Sue Redman, a Meadows resident, just published a book.

As she explains, "
We moved here in the 70s. Pollyanna (then Christy) grew up here and now lives in Sacramento.  Peter, the book cover artist, also grew up here and is still here.  Once you've found the perfect place to live, it's hard to figure out why you'd leave . . .

Millard Canyon Fundraising

Shared by a neighbor in The Meadows from Altadena Foothills Conservancy:

I think you’ll be glad to know that we’re almost there. We’re $40,000 shy of our $675,000 goal, but the current landowner has offered to put up $20,000 if we can acquire his land before the end of the month. So if we raise $20,000 to match his $20,000, we’re there! But we need to do it quickly.

The last thing we want to do is impose on your charity. But if you find that you have the means to help us with this last push, we would be so grateful. This has been a long process – AFC tried to acquire the land in 2004 and fell just short, and we’ve been working hard to put together the funding for this go-round for over a year.

200 of you have donated to the project so far, supplementing the “big” funding we’ve gotten from various agencies and environmental groups. If each of you gives another $100, we’d reach our goal. That said, any gift helps, large or small – especially since every dollar you give is being matched by one from the seller.

If you haven’t been to lower Millard, I’d love for you to join us to hike it this Saturday, Nov. 17, at 9 a.m.

Millard Canyon Meadows Meeting

An invitation from Meadows neighbors:

Meadows Meeting: Millard Canyon

3:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17

Home of Margaret and Dennis Bridwell – 4554 Rising Hill Road

Dear Meadows Neighbors,

We live just above a gorgeous wilderness area in lower Millard Canyon. This part of the canyon has long been in private hands, but the Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy is working to preserve it and keep it from being developed.

Please join us for refreshments and a conversation about the canyon with the conservancy’s executive director and one of its consulting biologists. We’ll talk about access to the canyon, the canyon as a community resource, and how we can help to improve its habitat. They’d like to hear our thoughts. We hope you’ll join us!

Sincerely,

Margaret and Dennis Bridwell

Horse Rescue

There were several fire trucks and an ambulance up on El Prieto this afternoon.  Turns out they're doing a horse rescue up in the foothills.
