Exchange Materials

A neighbor suggested that I create a section in the blog for exchanging building materials. I'm happy to do that if there's an interest in it. It could go beyond building materials if there's enough interest.

For now, she is searching for some chain link fence, the short kind, 4' high, to replace an older wire fence that totally collapsed in the windstorm and a couple of wooden gates.

Anyone have other materials from or not from the windstorm they're looking to get rid of or exchange?

Bear Program

Sierra Club plans program on local bear history - Noted wildlife biologist Kevin Brennan will present "Grizzlies and Black Bears in the San Gabriel Mountains" at 7:30 PM Wednesday January 25, at Eaton Canyon Nature Center, 1750 N. Altadena Drive.

Sponsored by the Sierra Club Forest Committee, the program will trace the history of the mighty grizzly bear that used to dominate local mountains and valleys.

Brennan, who has worked for the past 20 years with the California Department of Fish & Game, will also discuss the history and habits of the black bear, the successor to the grizzly that now roams our neighborhoods and hot tubs, and how humans can best live near the black bears of the San Gabriels. The public is welcome. Reception and refreshments are at 7:00 PM, the program begins at 7:30 PM.

"I am freaked. Three suspicious instances occurred since I last communicated with you: (1) I was sitting at my dining room table and saw a guy taking a photo of my house. I ran out and confronted him. He said he was just hiking. He was there with another guy. They said they had hiked over from Millard Canyon. Two white guys. They actually seemed innocent enough, but I don’t like people taking photos of my place. (2) Yesteday I saw an SUV coming down my driveway as I was coming up. He was in a hurry, avoided eye contact, and sped past. Today I noticed that one of my ladders is missing from my backyard. (3) Marina (my neighbor) said she saw a couple of guys taking photos yesterday of the trail near my house. They said they were scoping out bike trails. She said that routinely cars will come up here and drop off several bikers, then go back down. When she engages them they are rude and express a sense of entitlement. Holy cow! What is going on?"

Road Rage for Hikers?

This note came in from a neighbor:

"Yesterday afternoon I took the dog for a walk and was heading up El Prieto Road. A black car came speeding in reverse down the driveway from above the cul de sac and was headed straight for me. I moved around to get out of the way, but it turned and kept heading at me as I scrambled some more to get out of the way.

I finally cleared the backing, turning car as it stopped. I went around to the side and saw that the driver was looking at her phone in her lap texting. I got her attention and asked if she even saw me.

She said that this is a private drive and people don't have a right to be hiking on it. I said that this a public street that I'm on. She said that this is a private drive and a private cul de sac and that this is what people who live up here need to do. I asked her if she meant backing into people. At that point she waggled her finger at me and sped back up the drive to the last house on the right before the Lincoln Avenue Water Company gate and went into the house.

I was rather shocked. Be aware when hiking up there."

Sherrif Talked to Solicitor

The Sheriff did talk to the young man who was knocking on doors last night. He was trying to sell magazine or newspaper subscriptions. (That could be a scam too.) He was not scoping out houses for potential break-ins.

I described the experiences that many neighbors told me about to the Sheriff, including the young man asking for money, claiming he was from neighborhood Watch and that his mother lived on Canyon Dell.

The Sheriff also said that door-to-door solicitation is not unlawful.

The Sheriff encourages us to continue calling them if we see unusual activity in the neighborhood.

Graffiti Clean-UP

Neighbors are extending a big "THANK YOU" to a neighbor on Canyon Crest, Miche, who cleaned the graffiti that was on the AT&T cable box near the Meadows sign.

The graffiti showed up some time in the last day or so.

Scammers in The Meadows Thursday Evening

I received two calls from neighbors on Risinghill and El Prieto that the "Neighborhood Watch" scammers were knocking on doors again this evening.

(See the earlier post for advice on how NOT to answer the door.)

Again, it is potentially a team of people with one person trying to distract you at the front door while another is breaking into your house from the back.

Tonight, the scammer claimed to live on Canyon Dell with his Mother. He was estimated to be between 14 and 16 years old.

Both parties called the Sheriff who did come up into The Meadows.

A Meadows alert was generated at around 7:00 p.m. For those who signed up, you should have gotten a text, call, or email. If you haven't signed up and live in The Meadows, send me your contact information and I'll add you to the alert system.

Debris Clean-up Update

Greetings to you all,

At tonight's Altadena Town Council meeting, Edel Vizcarra from Supervisor Antonovich's office and Luis Sanchez from Athens Services answered questions from the Town Council members and provided some information on the clean up effort in Altadena.

Both the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and Athens Services have been in the community 7 days a week since the windstorm that began on November 30th.

Here are some things both the County and Athens would like for you to know:

1.    Some people have been cleaning up their yards and just dumping the debris from the windstorm on the street or parkway in front of their homes. Some have had others cleaning their yards and those hired to help, or their regular gardeners are continuing to dump debris in the street or on the parkway. That activity has been observed and the County and Athens request that we all take action to stop that practice.

2.    Athens will continue to pick up green waste in your green waste cart with the trucks specifically constructed for automated pickup of those carts. They will also continue to pick up bagged green waste - often in a different truck since the drivers don't have time to empty your cart and then refill it on the spot with your bagged debris. You will also see both Athens and the County's Department of Public Works crews picking up bundled tree limbs and twigs and bundled palm fronds.

3.    You may see Athens by-pass large bundles or large tree limbs either because they're too heavy for the driver to manage safely or because the bundle or size of the limb is too large for the equipment available and when that happens, you'll see Public Works crews dealing with those larger items because their crews have chain saws with them and they can reduce the size of the tree trunks, limbs and branches to make pick up easier.

4.    A number of people have complained about having to call Athens to let Athens know they will have extra green waste to be picked up. Please continue to call Athens to let them know you're putting extra green waste out for pick up because it helps them know how much equipment to stage for your area's pick-up day. They have had extra trucks up here dealing with all of their routes and will continue to have extra equipment up here until all of Altadena has been cleaned up. It may be an inconvenience to you to make that call but please understand - THIS EXTRA GREEN WASTE REMOVAL IS NOT PART OF YOUR 4 TIMES A YEAR BULKY ITEM OR LARGE ITEM PICK UP. The windstorm was an exceptional event, so you do not need to be concerned that you will lose your opportunity to extra pickups as were accommodated in the County's Franchise Agreement with Athens.

5.    Please help your neighborhood be cleaned up by helping those not able sweep up and bag the small green waste that is most likely going to migrate with the next rain. Any help for those who need help would be greatly appreciated and it will help us get Altadena's streets cleaned that much quicker.

6.    It will still take weeks to get the streets fully cleaned and all of the green waste picked up. Many thanks for all of the effort many of you have made to be in service to others, and many thanks to all for being willing to exercise patience.

If you have questions or are not certain about what to do about green waste, please let me know. If I can't answer your questions myself, I'll help be responsible for getting an answer.

Follow Up: Solicitor = Possible Break-In

I followed up with our Sherrif's liaison regarding the reports last night about a young man knocking on a neighbor's door to talk about Neighborhood Watch. This has been happening around other parts of Altadena. Please be cautious. Chances are this is someone scoping out your house. Here's Carolyn's comments:

The teens or young adults who've been knocking on doors around several neighborhoods have no connection to anyone we can think of in Altadena and their story changes slightly from one house to another. They'll try to tell you that they're working on an Eagle Scout program and are organizing a neighborhood watch, or that "my grandmother Marsha is the block captain and she asked me to come talk to you about neighborhood watch".

Their stories are bogus, and in neighborhoods where they are organized, they all know the guy standing on the porch is lying.

Chances are they're just trying to find out if you're home and their companions may be just out of sight or are already headed up your driveway to look for a way to gain entry through a door or window on the rear of your house.

Two different scenarios seem to repeat. Sometimes the person at the door is looking to distract you while their companions do attempt to break in - and some have been successful at that, or they're knocking insistently and when no one answers the door, they're in your home in a matter of seconds.

Don't trust any of it. Please thank everyone who calls the Sheriff's Station at 626 798 1131 and ask them to keep doing that, and when info is available, please gather as much descriptive info as possible - male/female, approx age, height, kind of clothing, color or pattern on their clothing, that sort of thing, but do it safely.

When that insistent knocking on your door starts, just holler "sorry, I can't come to the door right now". If the person at the door actually knows you, they'll holler back at you. The criminals won't. They'll just look for the quickest way in.

Any help getting the info out to others is greatly appreciated.

Just received a call from a neighbor that a young man knocked on their door, asking to enter their house to talk about Neighborhood Watch programs.

Please, don't let this person in your home. Call the Sheriff. They have been called to come up to The Meadows to investigate.

Not sure what this person's intent is, but better to be safe than sorry. This is not something organized by the neighborhood that we're aware of.

"We have had a really large (550lb+) brown bear in our yard since around 7:00 pm tonight. We have a ripe persimmon tree, but our trash cans got ravaged even though they were secure. We had the sheriffs come out and they scared him off, but I have a feeling he will be back tonight. I startled him once, looking for my cat (he scared me pretty good too!), but came right back like it was no big deal. I know it's part of living up here, and that is cool, but this guy was REALLY big and not shy. People in The Meadows should be careful."

AM DEC 15, 2011

There will be a strong upper-level low diving south across California

today,which will reach the Mexico border after dark.  This will create a

high-wind event for southern California.  We are expecting strong

northeasterly winds to develop after midnight tonight, persisting through

Friday.  Strongest winds are still expected to occur between 4AM and 12PM

PST Friday, with some reduction in speeds Friday afternoon.  A second

peaking of the gusts will develop late Friday night into Saturday morning

(from approximately 11PM Friday through 7AMSaturday).  From 4AM-12PM

Friday, peak wind gusts will run between 50-60 mph across southern portions

of the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains, passes and canyons in the

higher elevations of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, as well as the Santa

Clarita Valley.  Wind gusts to 35-50 mph will be possible in the Santa

Monica Mountains, eastern valleys of Ventura County,western portions of the

San Fernando Valley, the Ventura County Coast, and coastal sections of Los

Angeles County south of the Santa Monica Mountains including the

communities of Malibu and Hollywood Hills.  The peak gusts from11PM Friday

through 7AM Saturday morning are anticipated to run between 40-55mph across

the higher terrain, with gusts of 25-35 mph across lower elevations and

nearer to the coast. Winds will return to fairly calm by Saturday evening.

Compared to the severe wind event from a few weeks ago, this event will not

be as strong.  But with the wind gusts forecasted there could still be some

localized damage.San Gabriel Valley (Pasadena, Arcadia, Monrovia, Temple

City, Altadena):While the strongest wind gusts are anticipated to hold to

the north of the region, there will still remain the potential for strong

wind gusts over the San Gabriel Valley.  Peak wind gusts will run between

40-50 mph across areas north of the Foothill Freeway (inclusive of, but not

limited to, Altadena, Monrovia and Azusa), while gusts to the south of

there will generally peak out between25-35 mph. The time period of highest

gusts will occur between 8am and 2pmFriday with a slight decrease during

the afternoon and evening hours.  A similar peak time is expected Saturday

Assistance Needed to Remove Oak Tree

Sonja, a neighbor on Risinghill, had huge Oak tree limbs fall into her neighbor's yard. The estimates to remove them are over $5000. There's also a chance she'll need to remove other trunks on the tree at additional costs. Here's her message and pics of the tree:

"Hello, I have a very large section of my Oak Tree in my neighbor's backyard. Not sure how we are going to take care of removal and perhaps the rest of the tree too due to possible root damage. Any financial help would be a appreciated. I can be contacted at 791-8865."

More Info on Green Debris

We still have several large tree limbs and other green debris in the streets in The Meadows. I asked for some clarification on what the County will be handling.

Green debris in the gutter will be picked up by the County, but there's no set date for that. It could be 2 days or 2 weeks.

There's a concern over the next few days that if it rains, it could impede the flow of water on its downhill run.

Neighbors are encouraged to put the green debris in their green recycle bins for pick-up on trash day. Otherwise, what's in the street, bagged or not, will get picked up.

Green Debris Removal

Green Debris Removal

A systematic green debris removal process is now underway in the unincorporated communities of Altadena, La Crescenta, Pasadena, San Gabriel, Temple City, Monrovia and Arcadia. The County’s local waste haulers have doubled their crew and equipment to meet the increase in refuse. Residents are asked to place their green debris out on the parkway and it will be picked up on your regular trash day. The green debris should be light enough to be picked up manually and small material should be bagged or boxed. Please keep green debris off the road and place it on the parkway to avoid localized flooding during the forecasted rains.

Local waste haulers in unincorporated areas have also coordinated with the LA County Public Works Department and the Department of Parks and Recreation to offer the additional free debris drop-off events.

Update Date on Public Works and Edison

I received this email from Carolyn Seitz. In it she mentions that County Public Works is addressing the debris at the roads.

As of 1 pm today, Southern California Edison is indicating that there were still 1,504 customers without power, not all of them in Altadena.

They have also revised the total number of people who were without power to 433,945. Of that number, approximately 12,000 people are in Altadena.

Edison crews are now said to be going block by block to make sure power has been restored to everyone.

If you are still without power, please let me know ASAP.

If any of you still see downed power lines in your yard or anywhere nearby, please let me know ASAP and provide the address, your name and the best phone number to reach you.

As you can see by the mountains of debris piled up along roadways, there is still an enormous amount of cleanup left to do, but that too, is in process and the County Department of Public Works is making excellent progress.

Please continue to stay vigilant, stay connected to your neighbors and your neighborhoods. It's made a big difference for all of us in the effort to maintain a safe environment even under difficult circumstances.

MFSC Tree/Limb Removal

The Meadows FireSafe Council has a very small amount of money left in this year's grant. Members of the Council are going to identify any broken limbs or uprooted trees from the windstorm that could create a fire hazard for the neighborhood.

The MFSC will approach that neighbor and discuss what can be done.

SCE Update Friday Night

Power Restored to 65 Percent of Customers Who Lost Service Due to High Winds; Service to be Restored to Remaining Customers by Sunday Night

Southern California Edison (SCE) so far has restored service to 65 percent of its customers who lost power because of hurricane-force winds and

by Sunday night will have the lights back on for its remaining customers.

Trees and other large pieces of debris have hampered access for crews to equipment. As of 4 p.m. PST today, SCE had 131,591 customers

without service. It is expected to take two more days to restore power to the vast majority of affected customers. SCE expects service to be

restored to 99 percent of its customers by 8 p.m. PST Sunday.

We understand our customers are anxious to get their lights back on, and we're continuing to ask for their patience, said Ron Litzinger,

SCE president. The massive winds that hit Wednesday evening have created some of the worst damage we've seen in a decade and

resulted in some of the most complicated restoration efforts in years. Thousands of trees blew over, damaging thousands of overhead wires and

poles.

Crews are working to restore service as safely and quickly as possible where they have access. There are 217 SCE and contract crews

working to restore service. SCE must wait for local governmental agencies to clear debris where it is blocking access to SCE equipment.

The extremely high winds caused considerable damage to the distribution power grid, power lines, poles and equipment. Some restoration

may require reconstruction of the downed equipment. Customers are asked to stay away from any downed or dangling lines, including

those between homes and power poles. A downed line or dangling wire is dangerous - even if it appears not to be live.

SCE also is asking customers who have downed lines on or near their homes or businesses, both those that run between power poles

and from poles to homes or businesses to call 911 and stay inside to remain safe until SCE crews can repair the lines. Customers

unable to reach a 911 operator quickly can call SCE customer service at (800) 655-4555.

Edison Distribution Center

From Sheriff's Liaison:

SCE is planning to set up distribution sites to provide flashlights, water and ice in some of the areas

where we are still working to restore service. We are planning to have our meter service folks and

other SCE volunteers canvass neighborhood to help get the word out, in addition to the media advisory.

I believe we are looking at the Altadena Community Center (730 E. Altadena Drive, Altadena CA 91001)

as one of the sites. I will let you know as soon as I hear it is confirmed.

Oak Tree Trimming

I'm trying to get clarification from several sources on whether permits are needed to trim or take down Oaks due to the storm.

From one of our tree vendors, if the Oak is in risk of falling or already uprooted, no permit is needed.

If it is not in danger of the above, a permit is needed.

I'll post more as I hear it. Callin L.A. County Station 12 may be the best solution so that you're sure you're not fined.

Reminder About Any Missing Pets

Just saw a reminder from the Pasadena Humane Society. Their officers were very active last night picking up loose dogs that likely escaped from yards during the winds. Friendly reminder that any dogs that officers picked up in Altadena will have been taken to the LA County facility in Baldwin Park, since that is the facility that serves our area. Just in case anyone is looking for a dog that may have gotten out last night.

The Meadows FireSafe Council (MFSC) is looking for new members. As we wrap up the current grant, we're looking for new neighbors to join to carry on the efforts of the MFSC.

A meeting will be held Monday, December 5, 7:00 p.m. at 4416 El Prieto Rd.

Any interested neighbors are welcome to attend. The current members will give an overview of the council's efforts and talk about plans for the coming year.

Please think about joining to continue this important work.

Bobcats on Aralia

Two neighbors on Aralia reported bobcat sightings.

From Amish: "This bobcat got into it with a neighborhood cat this morning 9am. The neighborhood cat is a black and white cat that seems to be running quite freely in our area these days. I'm wondering whose cat this is? Luckily, our cat was not involved....its pretty beautiful."

From Michael: "Around 10:15 this morning (Sunday), Joanie and I were having coffee when we saw a small bobcat jump over the fence from Amish's yard, wander around our our backyard and then crawl up the chain link fence and jump over to Dale's back yard. About two minutes later a second cat (larger, probably the mom) jumped Amish's fence, walked on our patio, near the BBQ, jump up our Oak tree, onto the roof of our aviary and then jumped into Dale's back yard. Joanie was able to get a picture of the back half of the cat near the BBQ. Pretty cool for a Sunday morning."

Fliming on Lower Canyon Crest

Just got home to a notice regarding filming at 3720 Canyon Crest on Thursday, November 17th from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Activity: Exterior dialogue, drive up/by/away, crime scenes with weapons brandished, GUNFIRE with squibs from 7 a.m. - 10 p.m.

I'm not sure they notified all of The Meadows as I'm guessing someone put the notice on my lamppost to post to the blog.

And not sure if traffic will be held up on Canyon Crest.

It appears they've been there the last couple of days with a security guard out at the driveway. I haven't been impacted.

Good news is that this is the first time a production company has actually followed the notification rules to The Meadows when filming in the canyon.

Mountain Lion and Cub Sighting

From a neighbor on Tuesday, Nov. 15:

This AM (approx 9-930ish) I went hiking with Kuma (my dog) to the Millard Campground . After passing the fork that gives you the option of veering left to hike Upper Brown Mountaing or right to hike to the Millard Campground, Kuma and I startled a mother AND cub Mountain Lion! Although Kuma and I were very close, fortunately enough the mother ran in one direction (allowing me to only see her backside) and the cub (fyi approximately the size of a smaller pit bull) ran in an alternate direction.

After Kuma and I walked to the campground and made a u-turn, I saw a biker who was "warning" me that he saw a mountain lion cub. So with that said there is a possibility that for now, that area is the mother's territory.

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up to be very careful when walking in that area...especially for those that walk alone or don't have dogs weighing in at 140lbs...which may have posed to be a deterrent.

Sheriff's Food and Toy Drive

Greetings to you all,

As you know, the Sheriff's Department does an annual food and toy drive.

Because the economy is still having an adverse impact on many Altadena families, we are planning to provide food and toys for 250 families this year.

Last year we served 200.

Our efforts rely on the generosity of the community and Altadena has historically been very generous.

Here are some options for donating:

You can drop off non-perishable food or toys at the Altadena Sheriff's Station. You can also drop off cash or checks payable to "Altadena Station Fund" at the Station.

You can drop off non-perishable food at the Bank of America or Chase Bank on Lake Avenue and at the Altadena Library until December 3rd.

Some neighborhoods will also be organizing themselves to collect toys and non-perishable food. If your neighborhood is interested, please let me know. We'd be happy to arrange pickup.

One of the things that few people know is that the Altadena Sheriff's Deputies also feed hungry families out of their own pockets on Thanksgiving. If you would like to help them, all donations of cash or checks would be welcome at the Altadena Station over the next week to 9 days.

Many Altadena families are in dire straits and any contribution to help us take care of them would be dearly appreciated.

Speeding and Driving Concern

Concerns over speeding and safety are not new to The Meadows. Here's a post from a neighbor expressing concerns over recent experiences had in coming in and going out of The Meadows:

"I am EXHAUSTED of people driving erratically, dangerously, entirely too fast etc. not ONLY up in our neighborhood; but all the way down to Canyon Crest & Lincoln.

Today on a power walk down Canyon Crest (a little past the "hunting lodge" house") I was nearly rammed down by a neighbor whom I believe resides at the top of Canyon Crest (north of Rising Hill/Clover Hill).

Weeks ago when I was driving down the Canyon Crest hill (let me add I was going a little over the speed limit) I was being DANGEROUSLY tailgated by a neighbor. When I gestured for him to back off of me he continued and even attempted to pass me while an oncoming car was coming. I then got to the stop sign of Canyon Crest & Lincoln and put my head out of the window calmly asking if he realized that he was "riding me too closely" and I was then called EVERY foul name possible. Are you kidding me?

I know that even with a blog post there is a possibility that neighbors will continue to drive as if they are on at the Indy 500, the Autobahn, Worlds Wildest Police Chase Videos or being on the lam from the "law"...but MY life, my parents' lives (I have been in the car with my dad when some nut has passed him swerving an oncoming car...and this was by the cliff of Canyon Crest) my dog's life and the lives of everyone else who live up here should not be at risk; as well as the risk of the many wildlife that cross or linger on the roads.

Maybe we can suggest that people should wake a little earlier, leave on time so that they don't have to drive like bats out of hell OR rent a helicopter to get to their destination; as opposed to almost killing someone to do so. Also, cursing out a neighbor because they aren't driving as fast as they would like...really??? That is absolutely ridiculous, appalling, unacceptable and simply put IGNORANT!

I would hate to be "that one" who calls out the wrongs of other neighbors because I consider myself a "love thy neighbor" beleiver. I also really don't want to start naming names or posting car models and plate numbers...but if it continues I will! So could you PLEASE post something imploring the neighbors to cease being impatient "speed demons"."

Farm to Fork, October 22 at Loma Alta Park

The Los Angeles Community Garden Council (LACGC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit, volunteer-run organization created by local gardeners with a mission to connect people with community garden space in neighborhoods throughout Los Angeles County. Each year, the LACGC organizes the “Gathering of Community Gardens,” a free event that brings together a wide range of people involved with greening efforts and related activities across the county. The Gathering includes an educational conference with various workshops, a panel discussion, and a keynote address. This year marks the fifth anniversary of the event and we are particularly excited to share the news with our communities.

This year the event, themed From Farm to Fork, will take place on Saturday, 22 October 2011, from 8:00am-4:00pm at Loma Alta Park/Community Center and Altadena Community Garden in beautiful Altadena (3330 Lincoln Avenue, Altadena CA 91001). The day will include a variety of workshops (in English and Spanish) that cover topics such as compost and soil, mushrooms, seed saving, bread baking and the Cottage Food Law, restaurant-related agriculture, fostering leadership and culture sensitivity in community gardens and much more! Networking, special guests, and information booths will also be featured throughout the day.

The event is free, however donations are appreciated. Breakfast snacks and lunch will be provided by local Altadena eatery, El Patron. This is a low-waste event, and we ask participants to bring plates, cups and eating utensils. Food will be provided first come, first served.

Meadows Yard Sale a Success!

We had over 20 houses participate in the Meadows yard sale today. Lots of people came into the neighborhood to peruse and purchase.

Also, it was a great day for neighbors to say hello to each other.

It's been suggested that we do this at least annually if not semi-annually. So, I'll take the clue from all of you for when we want to do another one.

McCallister on a Ride-Along

Great story of achievement from one of our Meadows residents:

"Want to let you know that my son McCallister (11th grade John Muir High School student, who is also autistic) will be going on his first ride-along with the Pasadena Fire Explorers today at Station #34 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. He has worked hard for 3 years finishing a task book and passing physical tests to be able to go on these ride-alongs, and I believe he is the first autistic young man to be successful in the Pasadena ire Explorers Program."

Rambro is Back

This information was sent to the blog today. Again, please use caution in any interactions with him and call the Sheriff:

"Rambro/The Black Robin Hood" illegal deer and bear hunter was spotted Saturday @ 10AM by a Rising Hill neighbor on the upper El Prieto trail (dressed in camo and carrying his crossbow) walking south on the trail that is located behind the homes on the upper west side of Risinghill.

Although I didn't witness this, I believe that he is now parking and getting access via El Prieto as several Risinghill residents have threatened to call the authorities every time that he comes up here.

I have attached pics of the vehicle that I personally saw him drive in last year when I told him he had to leave our area up here and followed him down the hill. HOWEVER, on Saturday I do recall a green Honda Accord driving up past our house and I never saw it come back down...so I'm unsure if it was a legit hiker.

MFSC Working on Oaks

Pick Up Truck on Lower Canyon Crest

Today I was driving along Canyon Crest in the canyon, and spotted a brown pickup with metal in the back and two guys getting out of the truck. When I circled back around to check it out, the two men were not with the truck, I took a picture of the truck and it's licence plate, then called the Sheriff.

I just received a call back and they reported the two were arrested and the truck was impounded.

A Nice Message from a Past Meadows Resident

This post came into the blog. Thought it was a nice note about The Meadows:

I came across your website on The Meadows. I grew up there in the 60's and 70's

I lived at the very top of El Prieto (GREAT HOUSE) on the right just before you go up the road to what used to be a Nunnery.

Memories...We were evacuated in the sixties (during the moon landing) because the hill behind us was on fire. (same hill we used to fly our kites over)

All the neighborhood kids played Indians up in the hills. It was great fun.

My parents bought a little house on Sunmore Lane in the 70's.

In the summer I worked for Charles White doing filing. They lived up the street. Nice family, I remember Mr. White was ill and never was out of his house robe. I will always LOVE The Meadows...Who knows I may buy a house up there again some day.

Meadows FireSafe Council Recruiting

The Meadows FireSafe Council (MFSC) is looking to recruit new members to carry-on the great work they have been doing over several years.

While we are wrapping up the work from the 2010 grant, some members will be stepping down. Our heartfelt thanks to them and all the volunteer hours they have put in.

We don't want to see the MFSC go away as it has been instrumental in providing fuel reduction and education to our neighborhood. Their efforts and relations with all parties were very beneficial to us during the Station Fire evacuation and recovery.

We need some dedicated new members that want to continue the effort.

Bear Resistant Trash Cans

Bears generally do not go for landfill or green waste trash. But if you are putting out what I might call 'enticing trash' with food scraps and such, and you are regularly seeing your trash hit upon by bears, please be sure to contact Athens at the link above and ask.

Great Pyrenees an Option for Critters?

Interesting info on the Great Pyrenees from a Meadows neighbor:

"There is much talk about bears and mountain lions and how to deter them. I thought neighbors should know about the many Great Pyrenees dogs available for adoption which could serve as wonderful pets while deterring the wild predators with which we all choose to live in harmony.

"They are bred to be livestock guardians and as such their instinct is to patrol their property and ward off any threat to their family whether it be human or livestock. My two Pyrs discouraged the young mountain lion from approaching the back of our property on Canyon Dell, so I can personally attest to their ability."

Many Great Pyrenees available for adoption

Great Pyrenees Association Southern California Rescue has rescued every Great Pyrenees dog that was out-of-time at a shelter, pound or when an owner turned it in for the past 35 years. The dogs come from Southern and Central California and Southern Nevada. The director and volunteers have done a great service caring for them and finding homes for 1000's of gentle giants.

Because of so many people losing their homes and jobs, the rescue is very crowded. We need to find homes for more than 40 dogs in the next 2 weeks.

If you have ever had a Pyr in your family you know the calm love of these gentle giants, their allegiance to the family, their care of children and other animals. Please consider adopting one of our Pyrs.

Pyr rescue has a few puppies, a number of young dogs 1-2 years, mostly adult dogs 2-6 and a few older dogs 7-9. There are photos and descriptions of each available dog on www.petfinder.com. It is easiest to access this information from the rescue's website:

You will need to have at least a 6-foot fence surrounding your yard since Pyrs jump lower fences and can wander.

They need daily exercise. They eat as much as a retriever, about 3.5 - 4 cups of kibble a day. They don't need washing as their coat protects them during all seasons. However, they do need to be brushed weekly.

Meadows Garage Sale?

An idea has been floated for having a Meadows-wide yard sale in late September or early October.

We'd do it on a Saturday morning from 7:30 - 1 and everyone could set up their wares in their own yard. We'd then have a map for buyers to go from house to house.

Bear Aware (continued)

There has been alot of discussion this week about the bears in The Meadows. And that was meant to be plural. Past posts have talked only about a younger bear, but it turns out there is at least one other older bear, Together, they may be mother and cub. So, thought it worth to post again to keep awareness to it.

The bears have been mostly on Risinghill and continue to go into the trash cans to forage. They've been seen as early as 9 p.m. in neighbors' yards faraging through trash cans and eating fruit from fruit trees, particularly figs.

So, continued suggestions for living in harmony with our wildlife:

Don't put your trash out until trash day morning.
Keep trash cans in your garage if you have one.
Use double trash bags to minimize the scent.
Keep pet food inside at night.
Harvest your fruit. If you have some to give away, let me know and I'll post to this blog to share with neighbors.
If a bear is near your house, make loud noise (clanging of pots and pans). Bears will usually leave the scene when noise is heard.
Also, lights deter bears. Maybe a motion sensor light is a good solution.

Calling the Sheriff may not be a real solution for a couple of reasons. First, the bears will likely be gone by the time the Sheriff arrives. Second, it's there policy to respond only when an attack has occurred and we can do plenty (all of the above) to never come near that situation.

Again, we share the land with the animals. Let's do all we can to coexist.

Car Window Smashed

This morning, a neighbor reported that a car window was smashed on Canyon Crest and a laptop was stolen from the vehicle.

As a side note, Altadena Sheriffs have been encouraging everyone to not leave valuables in your car and to make sure the car is locked even if you're at home. There was a string of car break-ins earlier in the year in Altadena where valuable items were being stolen.

Mountain Lion on El Prieto Monday Morning

A neighbor midway up on the canyon side of El Prieto called to say a mountain lion hopped her fence this morning at around 9:00 a.m. He was probably a younger one as he wasn't that large.

He was in her backyard before heading back down into El Prieto Canyon.

Bear Tracking

I'm adding these posts from neighbors just so everyone is aware of where our bear is. Seems to be it is primarily on Risinghill except on trash night where its been seen on other streets. A couple of posts have talked about how it heads down into Millard Canyon.

Would love to post a picture if anyone gets one.

Here's one from tonight:

"On my run this evening at around 9:30PM, on Rising Hill, I unknowingly passed a residence with a bear in the front yard/driveway. After I was up the road for about ten yards, I heard the noise of some animal running, and I turned around to see a bear bolting from the residence into Millard Canyon (the portion of eastern side of Rising Hill where there are no homes). I ran a few yards futher up Rising Hill and turned back and made a few loud clapping noises, hoping to scare the bear, as I passed the open space of Millard Canyon."

Bear Tracking

Just keeping everyone aware of the bear!

Seen early Saturday morning at 1:00 a.m. rummaging through the trash at a house on Risinghill closer to Canyon Crest. The neighbor made loud noises and the bear took off.

So, since we have a permanent resident here in The Meadows, some suggestions:

Secure your trash cans
Don't put food in the trash until the morning of trash day. Or freeze it to be put in the trash the night before. That takes the smell away.
Bring in pet food at night.

From what I learned from a Park Ranger in Yosemite, bears track with their noses. It's all about taking the scent away so that we and the bear are safe.

UPDATED: Mountain Lion in The Meadows

UPDATE from neighbor who saw the mountain lion:

"saw him while driving home Tuesday at around 11pm. He ran across Canyon Crest and stopped in the front yard of a house about half way between Aralia and Gravelia on the west side of the street. I backed up to get a better look at him, he was BIG and didn't budge."

I'm trying to get more information on this and will update when I do.

A neighbor driving home to the cul-de-sac at the top of Canyon Crest saw a mountin lion around the corner where Canyon Crest, Risinghill and Cloverhill meet.

I think this happened last night.

Opportunity to Shred on Aug. 6

Bear Aware Update

Another sighting reported to me this evening.

On this past Saturday night at 10:30, the bear entered the property of a house on the east side of Risinghill. Sounds like the same bear - just under 200 lbs., looks young, paw to top of head about four feet.

He walked around the house and property and then headed down into Millard Canyon.

Past posts have been about the bear at Aralia and Canyon Crest on garbage night going through the cans and on the El Prieto Trail in the morning.

Suggestions for us as residents:

Don't push trash out until the morning of trash day.
Keep trash cans in a garage if you have one.
Freeze food garbage to eliminate the odor
Don't put pet food outside

Bears use their nose to find food and that's their main interest.

Any other tips I can share?

Be safe. Be bear aware.

It appears they are contracted by County and are working on the trees closest to the street as County has jurisdiction over those. And mostly the palms.

"I just wanted to give you a heads up that there is a bear in town. I live on the south end of Aralia, near where it meets Canyon Crest and at about 1:15 AM this (Monday) morning, I heard a crash out front, so I went to the window with a flashlight. Across the street was a bear eating from my neighbors trash cans. He was dark brown or black, and looked to be a on the young side, but I'm not positive. Figured I'd give you a heads up, and I will speak to the Sheriff tomorrow to see if there is anything that can be done."

I Have the Best Gardener

Jose and crew showed up at 6:00 this evening to replace some sod that had died. Unexpected! And not per my request.

He goes above and beyond any expectations to satisfy his clients.

We're doing great only a couple of weeks into raising funds for the maintenance at the Welcome to The Meadows sign.

Neighbors have donated $131 to date.

If we can get to $250 that would take us through the next two years.

So, if you'd like to donate, please give $5 OR LESS and drop it off to me. Checks can be payable to Greg Stanton.

Just drop it in my mailbox at 4416 El Prieto.

I track all of it and pay Darla each quarter.

Meadows Garden Fundraising

Several years ago, we raised money to pay for the maintenance and watering of the gardens around the “Welcome to The Meadows” sign. Those funds are almost gone.

It costs approximately $24-50 per quarter (depending on the season) to pay for the water and occasional hiring of help to weed and trim. Please know that Darla, the property owner, often performs the maintenance on her own without ever asking for compensation. I’m sure she’d welcome some help from other neighbors.

To replenish the funds and ensure that we have a wonderful entry to the neighborhood, please consider donating a small amount. I’m suggesting $5 or LESS. If enough people contribute, it will last a couple of years. If inclined, please send or drop off the money to me, Greg Stanton, at 4416 El Prieto Rd. Make checks payable to me. I keep track of the funds and reimburse Darla on a quarterly basis.

L.A. County Alerts

For anyone interested, this is a service from L.A. County that sends emails and texts of emergency notifications. I'm signed up and will pass any pressing notices to this blog.

Over the past year, the notices have primarily been about road closures, flood warnings and child alerts. I think it's worth receiving should we have a major disruption.

This is different from The Meadows alert system.

Raising Funds to Help

On Thursday, an Altadena family suffered the loss of their child, a beautiful 3 year old girl named Katherine, in a tragic accident.

It is devastating for them and it was for the Altadena Sheriff's Deputies and Captain McLean who arrived on the scene shortly after the accident occurred.

This family does not have the means to pay for a funeral for their daughter and Captain McLean, the leadership team at the Altadena Station and the Deputies are asking for your help.

You can help in one of three ways:

Drop money off at the Altadena Sheriff's Station and tell the person at the desk it is for the fund for Katherine.
Go to the car wash being planned for Saturday, July 2 at 11 am at the Carl's Jr., 790 North Lake Avenue in Pasadena
Go to Wells Fargo Bank and make a deposit to the fund for Katherine's funeral. Here is the info: "Katherine Lopez Donation" Acct #73-21253424

Any help will be gratefully appreciated by this family.

The wettest month was December, when we had 16.70", 14.4" of which fell in a 6-day-long "Pineapple Express".

Total rainfall for the previous year (2009-2010) was 29.35"

One of my listings in The Meadows was sold at auction today. I am in conversation with the investor who is open to a quick turn-around of the property. With an offer of around $425,000, this would be a great deal for a house on the canyonside.

MFSC Fuel Reduction Progress

Crews performing fuel reduction on our vacant lands in The Meadows have been on-site for the past two weeks. The effort should continue for about one more week.

The areas being addressed are the same as in years past - vacant lands behind the homes on Risinghill, upper Canyon Crest and to the east of upper Risinghill.

Here's what you missed if you couldn't make the Jazz concert this evening that Marsha (Meadows neighbor) is producing at Altadena Community Church monthly.

Tonight was Sandra Booker, a fantastic L.A. based Jazz vocalist. She is a modern day cross between Ella and Sarah, but adds a clarity of tone, huge range, powerful set of pipes to wonderful arrangements. Here's a little bit.

Please support Marsha as she brings Jazz to Altadena. Her conerts are monthly and only $20. That's a great deal for top notch talent at a local venue.

Another Great Altadena Community Garden Picnic

Saw several Meadows residents at the picnic this afternoon. Lots of people attended. The food was fantastic (although I again ate too much), JAZZ musicians were wonderful, and the gardens looked spectacular.

New Trash Contract for Altadena

From Alice Wessen, one of our Town Council representatives:

The county supervisors finally approved the trash hauling contract with Athens at their May 17 meeting. There will be a period of public notification, and it is hoped that Athens will start as Altadena's sole trash hauler in September.

Lots of detail here regarding pricing, containers, services and additional services:

Rates:

Base Service, per month: $18.06

Senior Discount, per month: $13.55

Difficult to access streets, per month: $22.57

Backyard roll out/pick up service, per month: $27.09

In addition to the services required under the agreement, Athens outlined the following commitments in their proposal to further enhance trash collection and recycling services in our community:

1. Increased the number of free bagged green waste pickup from 8 to 10 per year

2. Increased the number of bulky item collections from 2 to 3 per year

3. Free quarterly mulch giveaways

4. Curbside used oil collection program

5. Curbside battery recycling collection program

Franchise Area - Service Features

Once-a-week automated trash collection service.

One 96-gallon refuse container, one 96-gallon green waste container, and one 96-gallon recyclable container

Smaller containers are available upon request and are equivalent to original container size. For example, residents can receive (3) 32 gal. containers for each 96 gal. container

Residents can receive a extra green waste container and/or one extra recyclable container free of charge upon request

Residents may also substitute a extra recycle container for a green waste container upon request

Additional containers can be requested at the low rate of $5 per container per month

Free Holiday Tree collection services

Annual curbside clean-up event (including electronic waste)

On-call bulky item collections in unlimited quantities (twice per year, including electronic waste)

Four special community clean-up events per year

Semi-Annual E-waste and Clothing drop off event

12 recycling community events per year

Eight times a year, at no additional cost, excess green waste discarded in bags will be collected upon customer request.

Four times a year, at no additional cost, excess trash discarded in bags will be collected upon customer request.

Free “Sharps” mail-back disposal program

Free roll-out services for the elderly and/or disabled, upon request

25 percent senior discount for residents 62 or older who either (1) qualifies for utility rate discounts based on financial need and is the head of household, or (2) generates small amounts of waste and uses 32-gallon containers.

Additional Services Available Upon Request

Scooter Service (1) – For any customer requesting this service or if it’s determined that resident will be required to use this service when collection vehicles cannot safely access the containers

Roll-out/backyard service: This service means the driver will retrieve carts from your yard, dispose of your unwanted materials, and return the empty carts back to your yard.

(1)Please Note: The County will work with each customer, HOA, and Franchisee to determine what constitutes a difficult to services area.

MFSC: Fuel Reduction to Begin Next Week

Fuel reduction (brush clearance) will begin in The Meadows next Thursday, June 16.

The Meadows FireSafe Council will be using the 2010 grant money to, again, reduce the fuel on the vacant lands to the east of upper Risinghill Road, the areas behind the houses to the west of Risinghill, and the area as it continues above upper Canyon Crest.

Homeowners are still required to clear the first 100 feet from the houses.

It's expected that the effort will take about three to four weeks to complete.

After this effort, the next and final step in the 2010 grant is to address Oak trees in the neighborhood.

Any trimming or removal of branches on Oak trees requires a permit that the MFSC coordinates with L.A. County Fire at no charge to the homeowner. As a reminder, not having a permit can lead to substantial fines to the homeowner.

Assessments of the Oaks will begin in late Summer and trimming work will occur in early Fall.
In many cases, trimming of Oaks only occurs when branches are too close to a structure and considered to be fuel for a fire or if the tree is diseased or dieing.

Watch for more information on the Oak tree effort as we get closer to the dates above.

The upcoming Altadena Town Council elections needs volunteers to man the polls and count the ballots. Here's the info:

We're looking for volunteers to help with the Altadena Town Council Elections on Saturday, June 11.
There are five polling locations to choose from:

• Charles White Park 77 Mountain View Street (Ventura Street side)
• Farnsworth Park 568 East Mount Curve Avenue
• Gordy’s 843 West Woodbury Road
• S&J Auto 1904 New York Drive
• Webster’s 2450 North Lake Avenue

Shifts are:

Meadows neighbor, Todd Szabo and his band, "Spyder Blue", will be playing at the Rancho Bar this Saturday at 10:00 p.m..

The Rancho is at 2485 N Lake Ave, Altadena, CA 91001

Todd is a very accomplished drummer and singer. "Spyder Blue" plays an interesting mix of Country music and ballads. The band includes an upright bass player and trumpet.
